A DIAMOND IN THE MUD
A Miniature Audio Exhibition of Stereophonic Soundscape & Hörspiel Works
Project Concept
The “Diamond in the Mud” Project addresses areas of the senses that Westerners tend to overlook. It is also an Asian concept rooted in Buddhism that self-cultivation can be developed at home as a householder and is not merely confined to a temple or monastery. It has been said by Buddhists that enlightened beings are those who "grew" out of the "mud" of the material world. So, like the lotus flower, which penetrates through sullied mud and water, but emerges unspoiled, enlightened beings are beautiful and pure even though they grow up in the material world. The phrase “a diamond in the mud” is an analogy for this and in keeping with it, the Digital Art Weeks would like to issue this call to sound artists and hörspiel authors to submit stereophonic soundscape works in regard to the beautiful and the sullied. The works will be chosen on their ability to transcend the listeners into a “moment of tranquilly” and out of the confines of the everyday, or as expressed in the Diamond Sutra: “Dwell upon nothing and produce the pure mind.”
Playback System
Constructed as a dock for Apple’s famed iPod, the iCarta stereophonic audio playback system will be used to play back all of the selected works. The systems not only offers an interesting solution for public pod-casting, but it also acts uniquely as a bathroom dispenser for the indispensable: Le papier toilette.

Title: The Month I Met You
Author: Urduja Manaoag
Year of Production: 2008
Place of Production: Geneve
The month I met you has been created with a digital field recording I took of a large Buddhist bell I was striking on upon my first visit to Geneva in 2006. I create many sounds from this single recording by working with different digital software and hardware to transform the sound of the bell. Working in this method and composing the soundscape with meditative and subtle narratives, repetition, distortion, stillness expresses my own personal heart sutra. While composing I recall upon my meditation experiences from day to day life as well as from living at a Buddhisttemple in 2003.
Born in Detroit US, Philippine by origin. I studied visual arts and electronic music in London, England and currentlyattend a multi-disciplinary research studies postgraduate in Geneva, Switzerland.
Title: Formant
Author: Aaron Acosta
Year of Production: 2008
Place of Production: Winnipeg, MB, Canada
Formant is an electroaccustic piece that uses formant filters, granular synthesis and East Indian samples to create a layered environment that emphasizes a subtle nature in the soundsacpe. In the multitude of sound there is a clearness.
Aaron Acosta is a graduate from the College of Santa Fe with a BA in Sound Design in Media in 2002. He is involved with electro acoustic composition as well as more traditional composition and currently resides in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Title: Manipulationship
Author: Nicolas Dion
Year of Production: 2003
Place of Production: Montreal, Quebec, Canada
The title refers to a relationship that revolves around manipulation behaviors. However, the piece was meant as a suspended moment, peaceful and meditative, no matter how disruptive the surroundings are.
Nicolas Dion is one of the core members of Le Son 666 audio art collective. He performs solo as Darcin, with a netrelease entitled Parc, on the Panospria/NoType Netlabel. He also plays in 2 groups: Minibloc, and Intercom (the canadian one...).
Title: Camminamento S-mascherante 1 (SoundWalkScapes, 2006)
Author: Davide Tidoni
Year of Production: 2006
Place of Production: Florence, Italy
In SoundWalkScapes I attempted to define and document certain physical/corporeal expressions induced by the sono-spatial forms of the sonic garden during the listening and the physical experience. Creating a rapport with the spatial element and the "rhythmicity" of the location, I interpreted and re-arranged the presence of the sound diffusion exploiting behavioural techniques in stereophonic recording.
Davide Tidoni is a sound-space researcher and a constantly deepening listener. I continue a path of personal study that utilizes the expressive potentiality of environments and of electro-acoustic sound. I had the chance to learn and work with Mirko Sabatini, Tristan Honsinger, Andres Bosshard, Butch Morris, Raffaella Giordano, Sound and Experience Design…
Title: The Lost Cosmonauts
Author: Kurt Schlegel
Year of Production: 2006
Place of Production: Downstairs studio
The Lost Cosmonaut project is based on a collaboration between artists and a research group investigating the application of the interactive paper platform in an artistic setting for interactive narratives and story writing. A user sits in a fairly dark room in front of a semicircular desk. The wall in front of the user contains a large round hole which is used as a screen for projecting digital information. On the desk there is a Nokia Digital Pen and three documents forming part of an interactive narrative: a star map, a book, and a collection of love letters. Ambient sound in combination with artificial lighting is applied to generate different moods.
Kurt Schlegel (born 1958 in Lörrach, Germany),studied in Germany music, works as as a music teacher, specialized in composing music for multimedia installations und video projects.
Title: Castle Creek
Author: Jeremy Baguyos
Year of Production: 2008
Place of Production: Aspen Music Festival Studios, Aspen, CO, USA'
“Castle Creek” was written in the summer of 2008 in Aspen, Colorado. Although, the title is a direct reference to a creek that runs through the campus of the Aspen Music School, the work is a general programmatic depiction of all the rivers and creeks in the Aspen area that provide an underlying meditative calm to the intensity of the Aspen Music Festival. The work relies on a handful of short motives that are manipulated in a variety of ways and judiciously layered to create a new take on an old theme. This is not a romanticized babbling brook. This is a river that drowns urban apprehensions. The entire work is synthesized and exhausts the possibilities of one cusomized timbre.
Jeremy Baguyos is currently Assistant Professor of Music Technology at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. His current projects include research on the music of Mario Davidovsky and platform-independent design of databases for orchestra and opera music libraries. layered to create a new take on an old theme. This is not a romanticized babbling brook. This is a river that drowns urban apprehensions. The entire work is synthesized and exhausts the possibilities of one cusomized timbre.
Title: Calidociclo V
Author: John Garcia Rueda
Year of Production: 2007
Place of Production: Bogotá, Colombia
Notes: n.a.
John García AKA Jade (Há-de) is a Colombian composer born in Bogotá. He focuses his work on the study and composition of soundscapes. His major interest consists in sound exploration with both acoustic and electro-acoustic tools. Improvisation and poetry also play an important role in his life. Calidociclo V resembles the flowness of a ceremonial indigenous space. It is the soundscape of an imaginary tribal environment. The piece was composed having on mind the idea of simplicity. Through circular movements, silence, wood and metallic sounds, I tried to create moments in capes of sound that call for a meditative state.
Title: Ciguri
Author: Otondo Felipe
Year of Production: 2008
Place of Production: York, United Kingdom
This work was developed using part of the music for the dance theatre piece To have done with the judgment of Artaud commissioned by Base Theatre for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2007. The composition is inspired in the writings of Antonin Artaud among the Tarahumara Indians in Mexico and is structured as different states of intensity stemming from the ritual of the peyote. The piece explores the inharmonic timbral character of different types of bell sounds blended and contrasted in an expanding and contracting time framework that varies from rhythms to textures of irregular sounds.
Born in 1972 in Santiago, Chile, studied composition with Anders Brødsgaard, Roger Marsh and Ambrose Field. Has done mostly electroacoustic music, music for theatre and dance, interactive works and sound installations. His music has been played in festivals in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
Title: Impetus
Author: Mike Crain
Year of Production: 2008
Place of Production: Sacremento
Let the Impetus of harmonies impede all but your auditory senses. Exploring different rhythmic ideas on a vibraphone, a series of loops are created thus creating different melodic lines. The vibrations implore me to use some bowing to create this deep, rich, resonance of Sound with an impulsion of ethereal qualities to console you; Soothe you; and Guide you in a refreshing instance of Time. It’s a fillip to embrace; a stimulus to revere; a peace to cherish.
Mike is an award winning composer and percussionist living in Northern California. He has written for strings, percussion, piano, brass, chamber ensembles, and full orchestra. Mike has also played with some of the most prestigious performing ensembles and musicians in the US. Currently, he’s having fun looping and improvising
Title: Flowering
Author: Chi-Hsia Lai
Year of Production: 2008
Place of Production: Australia
Flowering was realised in SuperCollider. The entire composition was a result of the manipulation of six pre-recorded sound materials in total of 33 seconds. These sound materials include a gamelan gong and a Thai gong. By changing various sound parameters and scheduling multiple sound events, the original sound source was stretched into a six-minute music. The composition aims to create an atmosphere of a sacred ritual where a dance for the process of flowering took place.
Chi-Hsia Lai was born in Taichung, Taiwan. As an active musician, Chi-Hsia has performed with a number of orchestras and chamber music groups in Australia. Besides her interest in contemporary music, she also has a keen interest in computer music. Her current research project looks into performance practices in media spaces.
Title: Samadhi
Author: Chien-Wen Cheng
Year of Production: 2004
Place of Production: United States
Samadhi, a terminology in Buddhism and Hinduism, is a state of deep meditation contemplation that leads to higher consciousness. Inspired by the thinking of Buddhism and with my personal experiences and preference of practicing meditation, I try, in this piece, to convey an imagery of deep meditation and concentration and to create a mysterious atmosphere of oriental religions. The techniques mainly include convolution, granular synthesis, time-stretch, pitch change, morphing, spectral filtering. The processed sounds are arranged and mixed musically to achieve coherence and to create the imagery of the ideal world according to oriental religions such as Buddhism and Hinduism.
Chien-Wen Cheng received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Composition at the University of North Texas, where he studied music composition with specialization in computer music. Currently, he works as an adjunct assistant professor at National Kaohsiung Normal University in Taiwan.

Author: Helena Wee
Year of Production: 2005
Place of Production: London, UK
What's hidden inside our heads? Is our view of the world set by the time we are 10? Can science unpuzzle everything? Can kitsch be simultaneously superficial and profound? Can the combination of expert and lay knowledge produce a new multiply subjective paradigm? Are technology and architecture just the latest stages of our evolution? All these questions and more are fascinating to me. Sometimes the best ideas happen at the most mundane times; waiting for a bus, in the shower, sitting on the toilet... It is at these times, when our minds are not focused on anything in particular, that we gain an unexpected freedom. The dominant structures of our lives fall away. Patterns, previously hidden, slowly reveal themselves. Our thoughts wander. The Second Law of Thermodynamics states that entropy always increases. Eventually everything breaks down. When the universe ends only randomness will remain. Maybe all we are is a collection of tiny vibrating strings of energy. Different frequencies account for invisible particles and alternative planes of existence. Elegant symphonies of randomness and chaos, each movement varying in tone and colour.

Title: Alluvion
Author: Robert Dow
Year of Production: 1998
Place of Production: Edinburgh
Alluvion (1998) was commissioned by BBC Radio Scotland as part of their series of Domesday Soundscapes: a set of short 'sonic postcards' from various parts of Scotland intended for broadcast. Much of the source material was recorded on Harris, one of Scotland's Western Isles, during the previous year. Rather than a depiction or an aural snapshot of Harris, Alluvion is intended to be a personal response to the island and the experience of its bleak, isolated, beauty.
Robert Dow (b. 1964, Oakland) is a composer of electroacoustic music living in Scotland. He studied composition at the University of Birmingham under Jonty Harrison. He is currently Senior Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh.
Title: In The Beginning
Author: Petri Kuljuntausta
Year of Production: 2001 (edited 2008)
Place of Production: Meadow Path studio
I made this soundscape recording by installing a binaural microphones at the left and right sides of a hand-made wooden bird nest. The recording place was in my home garden at Meadow Path, Helsinki Finland. While young birds (Ficedula hypoleuca) waited their food they kept chirping every now and then. When the bird parents come back to the nest, the nest is immediately full of joyous sounds; sounds of chirping and flapping wings. Behind the bird sounds it is possible to hear sounds of human culture. Only a few hours after this recording the young birds left the nest.
Petri Kuljuntausta is a composer, performer and sound artist. In close collaboration with natural scientists, he has composed an underwater music and made music out of whale calls and the sounds of the northern lights. Environmental sounds, live-electronics, improvisation and collaborations with media artists have influenced him as a composer.

Title: Death Amoung Apple Trees
Author: Lisa Whistlecroft
Year of Production: 2007
Place of Production: Lancaster
Two characters, two aspects of a fragmented personality. Trapped – one in certainty, one in incomprehension – they exist in different spaces; but fear and darkness breach safety barriers, and certainty dissolves and drowns. Can ultimate peace be found in - or under - the waves? This piece is taken from the score for a dance piece 'The Saturated Moment'. The original theatre work was choreographed by Nigel Stewart, danced by Dominique Bulgin, presented by Sap Dance, and initially created through the Artists' Programme of Chisenhale Dance.
Lisa Whistlecroft lives in the wet and windy north-west of England. By day she works at Lancaster University and by night she composes soundscape and radiophonic pieces. Sometimes she sleeps
Title: Letzte Gebärde offener Münder
Author: Christian Banasik
Year of Production: 2001/05
Place of Production: Düsseldorf, private studio
Poems written by Michael Wuestefeld provide the poetic and tonal basis of this piece. The timber of the voice belongs to one of the planes which structure the piece. Furthermore, I developed a text analysis form for the written words consisting of seven groups of phonemes. These groups, combined with algorithmic models, control the form of the piece and every single sound object. Using an self-designed application in MAX, I was able to work with the different combinations of numbers which have been used for musical parameters such as material, duration, rhythm, stereophonic position and density. The semantic characteristic of the text objects depends on real-time calculations that, from time to time, create something like a new synthetic language or atomic word cells.
Christian Banasik (b. 1963) studied composition with Gunther Becker and Dimitri Terzakis at the Robert Schumann Academy of Music in Dusseldorf and with Hans Zender at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt. His instrumental and electronic pieces have been featured in concerts and radio programs throughout Europe as well as in the Americas, Asia and Australia. Beside live electronics and computer music, Banasik has produced works for tape, radio plays and film soundtracks.

I am a poet and language artist from New York living and working for the past ten years in The Netherlands. My poems and prose pieces have appeared in a variety of print and online journals as well as in my two books Paradise and Selfish Monologues. www.ajjones.org
Title: Attached to a Self
Author:Amina Memory Cain
Year of Production: 2007
Place of Production: n.a.
"Attached to a Self" is a piece of writing that takes place in a Zen Buddhist monastery, but questions the narrator's ties to it, and to her relationships to others, and to herself. In the story, The Diamond Sutra is studied, or the story shows someone studying it. Nothing is fixed, and still the narrator is human, and therefore pure, struggling to understand the world around her. A voice, in particular moments, can be a relaxing sound, and I submit a recorded version of the story hoping to provide a "moment of tranquility" in my reading of it.
Amina Cain writes stories that revolve quietly around human relationality, landscape and emptiness. Her first book, entitled I Go to Some Hollow, will be published by Les Figues Press in January of 2009. Also in January, in Chicago, she will co-curate When Does It or You Begin? (Memory as Innovation), a month long writing, performance, and video festival. She lives in Los Angeles.
Title: Radio Ghosts
Author: Mike Vernusky
Year of Production: 2008
Place of Production: Personal Studio
Excerpted from the electro-theatre collaboration with playwright Greg Romero premiered in New York City. Their collaborative work RADIO GHOSTS is a multi-layered piece that combines live performance and sound, creating a real-time bending, performative conversation between what is live, composed, and what is beyond the imagination. This excerpt is from the final scene for act 1, where Lorna speaks into the Pacific Ocean, hoping to hear the voice of her lost lover. The washes of noise are a blending of natural and synthesized types of noise. If you listen closely you might hear the call returned.
Mike Vernusky is a freelance sound artist. He writes music for theatrical environments through the use of electronics, and won the 1st Prize in the Digital Art Awards in Tokyo.
Title: I Don't Know
Author: Bruno Bresani
