The Digital Art Weeks PROGRAM (DAW06) is concerned with the application of digital technology in the arts. Consisting again this year of symposium, workshops and performances, the program offers insight into current research and innovations in art and technology as well as illustrating resulting synergies in a series of performances, making artists aware of impulses in technology and scientists aware of the possibilities of the application of technology in the arts.

[Kon.[Text]], this year’s Digital Art Weeks SYMPOSIUM concerns the use of the Performative Surround in the arts and the technology that drives it. The Performative Surround pertains to the immersive quality and quantity of the setting of a performative artwork that uses electronic media enhancement. Enhanced media art is any artwork that uses electronic media to communicate in part or in whole its message to the viewer. The viewer may be therewith integrated into the performative arena through the use of the communicative powers of the applied media.

In a series of lectures, demonstrations, panels and performances, artists and researchers will examine the use of electronic media in articulating the performer’s presence through the possibilities of the multi-sensuality of electronic media. The possibilities of blurring the divide between public and performer to bond them through the powers of dissemination and inclusion inherent within the technology behind the performative surround will also be considered as well as how communication between both performer and public can be interactively networked in real time through various forms of computer enhanced dialoging.

To draw a parallel between the symposium’s title [Kon.[Text]] and the phrase “in the body of the text” in terms how both performer and public are virtually networked by the expansion of the real into virtual, issues in media enhanced performance and its re-embodiment into the domains of hyper-reality will be tangibly demonstrated in a series of evening performances.

The organizers of the Digital Art Weeks ETH Zurich have sought out and selected presentations, demonstrations and performances on many themes specific to performance using electronic media that explore a concept of the Performative Surround in terms of how computer-mediated communication and dialog takes place between performers and viewers and how it tends to aid in dissolving the divide between performer and viewer.

Grammar-based Software Systems for Multimedia

Topics this year for PANELS concerning in relationship to the Performative Surround include:

Software Innovations relevant to all aspects of Computer Mediated Communication and its application in the performing arts
Live Cinema, Expanded Video, Film Rescoring & Immersive Audio Space & Video Space
Projects concerning the dissolve of the Performer-Audience & Private Space-Pubic Space Divide

KEY NOTE SPEAKERS

Jan Borchers is full professor of computer science and head of the Media Computing Group at RWTH Aachen University. With his research group, he explores the field of human-computer interaction, with a particular interest in new post-desktop user interfaces for smart environments, ubiquitous computing, interactive exhibits, and time-based media such as audio and video. Before joining RWTH, he worked as assistant professor of computer science at Stanford and ETH Zurich. He received his Ph.D. in computer science from Darmstadt University of Technology in 2000, and is a member of ACM, SIGCHI, and GI. http://www.hcipatterns.org/
Atau Tanaka is researcher at Sony Computer Science Laboratories (CSL) Paris, spanning cultures and encompassing domains of artistic expression, scientific research, and industry. He holds degrees in science and music from Harvard University and Stanford University's CCRMA. He has conducted research at IRCAM in Paris and was Artistic Ambassador for Apple Computer Europe. In Japan he has been in residency at NTT/ICC and taught Media Art at Keio University. He is known for his work with sensor instruments and network music installations, in artistic exhibition as well as scientific publications. He current work is focused on harnessing collective musical creativity on mobile devices, seeking the continuing place of the artist in democratized digital forms. He has received support from the Fraunhofer Institute, Japanese Telecommunications Ministry, and the Daniel Langlois Foundation. He has served on committees of the Audio Engineering Society (AES), New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), and ISEA. http://www.xmira.com/atau/
Johnny De Philo (Prof. Golding) is a working philosopher and artist. She is attracted to the sensuous logics slipping in and amongst aesthetics, media arts, and mathematics under the rubric of "visual/acousticpoetics". Installation/filmand video work have been shown throughout the UK, Europe, Western/Southern Africa and US galleries/contemporary arts institutes. Currently holds the Chair in Philosophy of the Visual Arts and Communication Technologies and is Programme Director for the postgraduate New Media Arts programme: Critical Studies, New Media and the Practising Arts, University of Greenwich, London.http://www.gre.ac.uk/~gs04
