PARTICIPANTS (In Alphabetic Order, List Incomplete)

Jackson 2Bears (CAN)

Jackson 2Bears is a Kanien’kehaka (Mohawk) multimedia artist. 2bears'has exhibited his multimedia works in solo and group exhibitions across Canada, most recently at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (Victoria B.C), ImagineNative Film + Media Arts Festival (Toronto O.N.), Video In Video Out (Vancouver B.C.), and at the Visual Eyez Festival (Edmonton A.B.) He has also been exhibited internationally in media arts festivals and group exhibitions, most recently at Digital Art Weeks (Zurich, Switzerland). He has also released several recordings and live performances on CD and DVD in both solo and collaborative contexts. 2bears is a Ph.D. student at the University of Victoria.

Colin Andrews (GBR)

Colin Andrews was born in Northern Ireland and currently lives and works in Scotland. He studied Fine Art Photography at Glasgow School of Art and Electronic Media at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. He has exhibited internationally and juggles practice as a lecturer in Photography and Film at Edinburgh Napier University.He currently works with a range of electronic and lens based media producing work for a variety of contexts including galleries, cinematic and public domains. Coming from a background in photography, light and it's affects are a constant in his work. History, and the repetition of history are abiding philosophical concerns and provide the basis for a methodological approach which often involves making links and connections between stories, places, events or incidents from the past and those of the present.

Geoff Barton (GBR)

Geoff Barton is professor of Bioinformatics and Head of the Data Analysis Group in Dundee. He has worked for over 25 years on developing computational methods to understand the structure and function of biological molecules such as DNA and proteins. Scientists world-wide use computer programs and techniques developed by his group in their diverse research. genomescroller shows how massive the human genome is, but we now have tens of Human genomes and will soon know thousands! This is a very exciting time for Bioinformatics research as we work out new ways to analyse and understand this wealth of information.

Faris Basharahil

Faris Basharahil is Chief Executive of Social Creatives Ltd. Social Creatives is a non-profit Social Enterprise that aims to make Singapore happy through murals. He was involved with community work since the age of 14. In 2011, Faris was a contestant in the TV show: We are Singaporeans. In 2011, he received a long service award for grassroots involvements. His love for the art was further nurtured when he was President (Youth) for Siglapian Alumni Assoc which is currently East Zone Centre of Excellence for the Arts. Faris was a recipient of the LTA Book Prize and in an informal group effort secured the Presidents Award for Social Services in 2007. His passion to serve the community was triggered by feeling society is very structured and the wanting to do something about it. Faris was under the Dyslexia programme while in primary school. As Chief Executive, he overseas management, governance and stakeholders. To date, Social Creatives has created over 150 murals, 2 street art galleries, a community museum and engaged over 20,000 people. Faris' favourite vegetable is popcorn and he has a cat that is named kitty

Charlotte Malterre-Barthes

Charlotte Malterre-Barthes is an architect, urban designer and researcher with Prof. Marc Angélil at the ETH/ FCL. She studied at the ENSA Marseille, TU Vienna and ETH. Interested in how political and social frameworks form architecture and urban territories, Charlotte is currently working towards a doctoral degree on food and urban transformations at Future Cities Laboratory.

The Bio-Boys (GBR)

The Bio-Boys is an interdisciplinary arts-science group consisting of the film maker Peter Richardson, the Astrophysicist and BioInformatics specialists Geoff Barton and Nick Schurch, and the Chemist Chris Cole. Peter Richardson is currently Director of the Visual Effects Research Lab (VERL) A European Union funded project that undertakes transdiscaplinary research into high-resolution image technologies.Nick Schurch’s research focuses on identifying the genes involved in interesting biological processes. He is fascinated with complexity of the Human genome and how much there is still to discover. Chris Cole is a originally a Chemist who Chris first became interested in Bioinformatics when all his lab experiments failed to work. He is a now a researcher in Bioinformatics as part of the Data Analysis Group. Geoff Barton is professor of Bioinformatics and Head of the Data Analysis Group in Dundee. He has worked for over 25 years on developing computational methods to understand the structure and function of biological molecules such as DNA and proteins. The group as whole creates project that make the invisible visible and the complex, more obtainable to understand.

The Blackmarket (SGP)

The lifestyle boutique, Blackmarket is a renowned and trendy fashion collative located along Singapore’s famed Orchard Road. The remaining 10% are interesting pieces selected and collected from around the world. Blackmarket carries only a limited number of each piece and does not restock most of the items sold. Blackmarket has gained prominence in Singapore's fashion scene and has been featured in numerous editorials and styling projects. Whether you are a full-scale fashionist or design enthusiast, Blackmarket is a must visit for all those aesthetically minded.

Miha Ciglar (SVN)

Miha Ciglar is a composer and researcher in the field of audio technologies. He holds a MSc degree from the Academy of Music and the University of Technology in Graz, Austria. In 2008, Ciglar founded the Institute for Sonic Arts Research - IRZU. He is the initiator and curator of the international sonic arts festival EarZoom, which takes place annually, since 2009 in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In 2011 he founded the start-up company Ultrasonic audio technologies Ltd. Ciglar was the conference chair of the 2012 International Computer Music Conference (ICMC), which will be held at IRZU in Ljublajna, Slovenia

John Cleater (USA)

Educated and trained as an architect, John Cleater received his Masters from Columbia University. He worked with Asymptote Architecture In NYC from 1989 – 2003 where he lead projects for clients such as Guggenheim Museum, Venice Biennale 2000, Documenta XI, NYSE, and others. He is a founding member of the multimedia performance group, The Builders Association, and has created designs for several of their productions since 1993. After being introduced to Augmented Reality in the fall of 2010, his AR work has been included in group exhibitions with Manifest.AR at ICA Boston, Venice Bienalle 2011, Devotion Gallery, NY, Kasa Gallery in Istanbul, Turkey, DUMBO Arts Festival 2011, and others. In the summer of 2011, Cleater curated and participated in an AR exhibition at OMI International Arts Center in upstate NY. Participants of this exhibition included such architects as Acconci Studio, Daniel Libeskind Studio, SHoP, Asymptote, and others.

Chris Cole (GBR)

Chris Cole is originally a Chemistry graduate, Chris first became interested in Bioinformatics when all his lab experiments failed to work during his PhD. Since then he has found a fascinating world of protein structure and complex biological problems. He moved to Dundee in 2006 and has continued his research in Bioinformatics as part of the Data Analysis Group.

Art Clay (USA/CHE)

Art Clay is an artist and curator who was born in New York and lives in Basel. He is a specialist in the performance of self created works with the use of intermedia and has appeared at international festivals, on radio and television television in Europe, Asia & north America. His recent work focuses on media based works and large performative works and spectacles using mobile device. He has won prizes for performance, theatre, new media art and curation. He has taught media and interactive arts at various Art Schools and Universities in Europe and North America including the University of the Arts in Zurich. He is the initiator and Artistic Director of the 'Digital Art Weeks' in Zurich.

Com&Com (CHE)

Com&Com was founded in 1997 by Marcus Gossolt and Johannes M. Hedinger. 
They live in Zurich and St.Gallen and work in situ. Com&Com achieved international recognition in 2001 with their film project with HR Giger, C-Files: Tell Saga, which was invited by Harald Szeemann to be shown at the Venice Biennal. Their pop song “Side by Side” with Dieter Meier (Yello) reached the Swiss Top Ten in 2002, and their controversial project featuring the monument “Mocmoc” (2003-07) culminated in a national referendum. In addition to such participatory works in the public and social arena, Com&Com has more recently (re)discovered performance; classical media such as drawing, painting, and sculpture; and subjects such as nature, folklore and tradition. So far, Com&Com has taken part in more than 120 exhibitions in 18 countries, made 22 short films, issued eight CDs and seven books, and staged a musical.

Curious Minds (CHE)

The guiding principle of the international arts group Curious Minds is simply to remain healthy and curious. Since their founding in 2010, Curious Mind has expanded with a “no names needed” approach with members residing in Berlin, Montreal, Warsaw, Zurich, and Tokyo. The group has produced a diverse number of art objects in the form of witty games, viewing cards, bedtime stories, and a variety of easy music works. Because their work lies outside of the periphery of the art market and created to be “played”, the group has avoiding the beaten path and has pursues exhibiting in institutions for presentation of sciences and design. Curious Minds has also exhibited in museums and galleries in North America, Asia and Europe. Works are available for purchase at museum stores.

Roland Dahinden (CHE)

Roland Dahinden studied trombone and composition at Musikhochschule Graz (Erich Kleinschuster, Georg F. Haas), Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Vinko Globokar), Wesleyan University Connecticut (Anthony Braxton, Alvin Lucier) and Birmingham University England (Vic Hoyland). As a trombonist, he spezializes in the performance of contemporary music and improvisation/jazz world wide. Composers such as Maria de Alvear, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Joelle Léandre, Alvin Lucier, Chris Newman, Pauline Oliveros, Christian Wolff amongst others wrote especially for him. Since 1987, he works in the duo with Hildegard Kleeb and since 1992 together in the trio with the violonist Dimitrios Polisoidis. As a composer, he collaborated with visual artists Andreas Brandt, Stéphane Brunner, Daniel Buren, Rudolf de Crignis, Sol LeWitt amongst others as well as with the architects Morger & Degelo, and with the author Eugen Gomringer. Exhibitions with sound installations and sculptors in Europe and America.

DYZ aka Yazid Dyz (SGP)

DYZ is a DJ and sound engineer based in Singapore. He began spinning in the early 90s, and inspired by artists such as Carl Cox or Sven Väth, he freely expresses himself through different genres ranging from tech house, progressive house, to electro and techno. With his undoubtedly amazing skills, this talented DJ was awarded as 2nd prize winner at the Pioneer Digital DJ Battle in 2009.

Alex Erath

Alex Erath is currently senior researcher and research coordinator (Deputy PI) of the transport planning and mobility module at the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL) of the Singapore ETH Centre. He completed his PhD in transport planning at ETH Zurich in 2011. He is the Singapore-based Senior Researcher at SEC/FCL Module VIII on transport planning and mobility. At FCL, he lead the implementation of the large scale, agent-based transport demand model MATSim for the case of Singapore. His main research interests are transport demand modelling and travel behaviour analysis. He has been involved in various studies on travel behaviour with a focus on stated preference surveys. Further projects included a baseline survey on mobility pricing in Switzerland which covered both aspects of acceptability and demand reaction and the joint estimation of several Swiss stated preference data sets whose results are now part of the Swiss cost benefit guidelines. He has published widely on choice modelling, vulnerability of transport infrastructure and transport demand modelling.

John Craig Freeman (USA)

John Craig Freeman's work has exhibited internationally including in Belfast, Los Angeles, Beijing, Zurich, New York, Warsaw, Kaliningrad, Bilbao, Boston, Havana, Calgary, Mexico City, and London. He is an NEA fellow with a BA, UCSD and MFA, CU Boulder. He is an Associate Professor of New Media at Emerson College.

Eva Friedrich (DEU/SGP)

Eva Friedrich is an architect from Germany with a special interest in urban economics and urban morphology, digital analysis and design techniques. She is a researcher at the ETH Zurich's Future Cities Laboratory. Before coming to the ETH, she worked at the architectural firm Foster+Partners, London, UK, as part of the urban design team. From 2005 to 2010, she worked at Space Syntax Ltd, based in London and became head of research and development in 2009. She was leading on the research of new design, analysis and visualization methodologies applied to space syntax practice and the development of a GIS software platform to support consultancy projects. Eva has several years’ professional experience in various practices in Germany and the UK. She has been working on projects ranging in scale from architectural to urban design. She has taken part in several architectural and urban design competitions that have been awarded and published.

Felix Heisel (CHE)

Felix Heisel is currently working as a researcher in the Chair of Architecture and Construction at the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, a collaboration of the ETH Zurich and the National Research Foundation Singapore. Preceding this position, he was the coordinator for the 3rd year architecture program at the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development EiABC in Addis Ababa. Felix recently guest-edited the ‘Constructing Alternatives’ issues of Construction Ahead, the leading Ethiopian construction magazine in 2012. He also contributed several articles to the book ‘Building Ethiopia’ by Helawi Segnet and Zegeye Cherenet, Addis Ababa, 2012. Felix has won several prizes within the last years, such as the SMART Innovation Grant Singapore (2013), the Bauhaus.SOLAR Award (2012) or the 1st prize Ideal Theater Competition, USITT in Kansas City. His interest in Ethiopia's urban growth resulted in the making of the movie series 'Spaces', a collection of 6 documentaries on space appropriation in Addis Ababa, started together with Bisrat Kifle in 2011.

Steve Gibson (CAN/GBR)

Steve Gibson is a Canadian media artist, curator and Reader in Interactive Media Design, Northumbria University, Newcastle. He was formerly Director of the Multimedia Program at Karlstad University in Sweden, and later Associate Professor of Digital Media in Visual Arts at University of Victoria. He was also curator for the Media Art event Interactive Futures from 2002-07. Influenced by a diverse body of art and popular movements his work fuses electronica, immersive art, game art, montage and post-minimalism. His pieces have been performed at major venues including: Ars Electronica; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Banff Centre for the Arts; the European Media Arts Festival. He co-edited a volume entitled Transdisciplinary Digital Art which was released by Springer in April 2008.

Jürg Gutknecht (CHE)

Jürg Gutknecht is professor for computer science and head of the Computer Systems Institute at the ETH Zürich. He has a passion for new hybrid art forms. He has actively participated in culturally-oriented "wearable computing" projects, including "Instant Gain in Grace" (motion tracking of a Butoh dancer), "Going Publik" (distributed orchestra based on mobile electronic scoring), and "On the Sixth Day" (multi-channel video system for interactive storytelling). Together with Sound Artist, Art Clay, he organizes the Digital Art Weeks which offers performances and provides courses in the areas of computer-aided art and music.

Dirk Hebel (CHE / DEU)

Dirk Hebel is currently holding the position of Assistant Professor of Architecture and Construction at the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, a research project of ETH Zurich with the National Research Foundation Singapore. Prior to that, he was the founding Scientific Director of the Ethiopian Institute of Architecture, Building Construction and City Development in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Between 2002 and 2009 he taught at the Department of Architecture, ETHZ as the coordinator for first year architectural design program and the director of the’ Master of Advanced Studies’ program in Urban Design with Prof. Dr. Marc Angélil. The resulting work of his teaching and research has been published in numerous academic jounals and book publications, lately SUDU: THE CONSTRUCTION OF A SUSTAINABLE URBAN DWELLING UNIT (forthcoming) and CITIES OF CHANGE: ADDIS ABABA (with Marc Angélil). In 2008, he published the book DEVIATIONS (with Marc Angélil), an experiment in architectural design pedagogy and in 2005 BATHROOM UNPLUGGED (with Jörg Stollmann). His research at FCL Singapore concentrates on alternative building materials and construction techniques and their applications in developing territories.

HEBO (CHE)

HEBO is a collaboration of Johannes M. Hedinger and Frank Bodin. 2008 they built their first art robot (HEBO #1), since 2011 they developed HEBO #2 in cooperation with ETH Zurich, Institute of Robotics and Intelligent Systems (Prof. Dr. Robert Riener, assistance Felix Schulthess et al.) www.he-bo.net Johannes M. Hedinger is an artist, arthistorian and lecturer at ZHdK Zurich and University of Cologne. His art ist mostly know for his contribution to the the art duo Com&Com (www.com-com.ch). Frank Bodin is a composer, pianist and advertiser. Chairman & CEO der Havas Worldwide Gruppe Schweiz.

Ted Hiebert (CAN)

is a Canadian visual artist and theorist. His artworks have been shown across Canada in pubic galleries and artist-run centres, and in group exhibitions internationally. Recent exhibition venues include The New Gallery (Calgary, AB), the Comox Valley Art Gallery (Courtenay, BC) and the Siauliaia Art Gallery (Lithuania). Hiebert’s theoretical writings have appeared in, among others, The Psychoanalytic Review, Technoetic Arts, Performance Research and CTheory. He is an Assistant Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts at the University of Washington Bothell.

Ichi Ikeda (JPN)

Osaka-born artist Ichi Ikeda has dedicated the majority of his prolific career to raising global awareness around water issues and conservation through both large and small-scale interventions. His art serves as an inspirational focal point for the exchange of water-related information. His interventions include international conferences and seminars, community activism, public performance and interactive WaterArt installations. Specific projects include local water-carrying actions in Japanese markets, a supper for people affected by the construction of a dam, as well as sprawling "paintings" made from the deposits of polluted water and river silt on cloth. In 1997, Ikeda developed the Arcing Arc project which brought the cities of Kaseda and Taipei together through a series of public installations, calling attention to water conservation and specific environmental conditions shared by the two cities. The Arc has since expanded to include the cities of Hong Kong, Manila, Bangkok and Yogyakarta.

Doug Jarvis (CAN)

Doug Jarvis is an artist and curator living in Victoria, BC. He is a founding member of the avatar performance art group Second Front and the Noxious Sector Art Collective. His individual and collective projects have shown at G++ Interactive Media Arts Gallery (Victoria, BC), PAVED Arts (Saskatoon, SK), Latitude 53 (Edmonton, AB), Eastern Edge (St. John’s, NFLD), Harbour Front Gallery (Toronto, ON) and the Xi’an Academy of Fine Arts (Xi’an, China). Jarvis was the 2010-11 Artist-in-residence Fellow at the Centre for Studies in Religion and Society, University of Victoria, and is currently Guest Curator at Open Space Arts Society (Victoria, BC) curating recent exhibitions by Deirdre Logue (Toronto, ON) and Susan MacWilliam (Belfast, N.Ireland). Andrew J. Jones (USA/NDL)

Andrew J. Jones was born in Chicago and raised in New York's Hudson Valley. After attending SUNY Cortland, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in publishing and music. In 1996 he and his wife expatriated to Copenhagen, Demark. He is the author of many poems and one chapbook, Paradise, published in 2004. Since 1998 he has lived in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Shenghen Lim (SGP)

As an artist, Shengen Lim interested in the ideas of lost, be it an object, a moment, a sensation or even a being. He says of his work; I often find myself lost within experiences, overwhelmed by the multiple interpretations from the daily occurrences. In my practice, an alchemist-like process is used to translate or transmute phenomenological encounters to produce deliberate, yet surprising interventions. It is with this process that the sense and pleasure of being lost is negotiated with the ideals and accomplishments of being found within the work that are produced. The artist's practice offers a stimulated perspective that is invested in the sublime.

Lin Hsin Hsin (SGP)

Deeply rooted in mathematics, technology, art and music, Lin Hsin Hsin is a digital media pioneer in the world since 1985. She conducts basic research, she has initiated, established the notion of paradigm shift eco-friendly technologies. Amongst her many world firsts: building the virtual museum, 1994, using only equations to build, animate and manuffacture sculptures, 3D objects and jewelry, 2007, building and playing music without musical instruments (I-Musika: MIME), 2007, painting without a PC - In-camera painting (ICP), 2010, create and display Stereoscopic 3D art without extra hardware and 3D glasses, 2011, using equations to choregraph and dance TANGO (TouchANdGo) on the smartphone, 2012. Anchored on Linux and Android, the award-winning Hsin Hsin, is an author of 65 books, many of her papers have been published in journals and major conference proceedings.

Lily & Honglei (USA/CHN)

Based in New York and Beijng, Lily & Honglei work as an artist collective. Utilizing traditional painting and animation, as well as new media such as virtual reality and augmented reality, Lily & Honglei create ‘visual fables’ intertwining current social issues with cultural heritages.Lily & Honglei’s works exhibit at numerous international and national venues, including Museum of Art and Design in New York, Institute of Contemporary Art Boston, The Painting Center of New York, Eyebeam Art Technology Center New York, Zero1 Biennial in San Jose CA, New York Artist Residency Studios Foundation Gallery, Shanghai University Gallery in China, FILE-Electronic Language International Festival in Brazil, Queens Museum of Art in New York.

Institute for Infocomm Research (SGP)

The Institute for Infocomm Research (I²R pronounced as i-squared-r) is a member of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) family. Established in 2002, our mission is to be the globally preferred source of innovations in `Interactive Secured Information, Content and Services Anytime Anywhere’ through research by passionate people dedicated to Singapore’s economic success. I²R performs R&D in information, communications and media (ICM) technologies to develop holistic solutions across the ICM value chain. Our research capabilities are in information technology, wireless and optical communication networks, interactive and digital media, signal processing and computing. We seek to be the infocomm and media value creator that keeps Singapore ahead.

Hildegard Kleeb (CHE)

Hildegard Kleeb is a well-known pianist who specialises in the performance of New Music and improvisation. After completing her studies in Zurich, she continued with Claude Helffer in Paris and with Jürg Wyttenbach in Basel. In 1990 she was a visiting scholar at the Academy for Visual Art Design in Helsinki and from 1992 to 1995 she was a resident artist at Wesleyan University, Connecticut. She has premiered numerous new works including compositions from Peter Ablinger, Maria de Alvear, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Roland Dahinden, Hauke Harder, Bernhard Lang, Alvin Lucier, and Christian Wolff. She has recorded for Everest Rec. Berne, hatART Basel, Lovely Music New York, Mode Rec. New York, World Music Cologne and several others. Since 1987, she has been playing in duo formation with Roland Dahinden, since 1992 as a member of the Trio Dahinden-Kleeb-Polisoidis, and as a duo with Pelayo Fernandez Arrizzabalaga. Recently she has been involved with a series of “Social Performance“ projects such as „Zitronenbaum“ and „Kirschblütenzweig und Uristier” that addresss important social and political issues of today.

Urich Lau (SGP)

Singaporean visual artist Urich Lau Wai-Yuen (born 1975) works with video art, photography and printmaking, and he is also an independent curator. He has presented his works extensively locally in Singapore and in various countries. He holds a Master of Fine Art degree from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 2004 and currently works as an art lecturer at LASALLE College of the Arts. He has been a member of Printmaking Society Singapore since 2007 (currently as Vice-President) and The Artist Village since 2009 (currently as President), and a resident-artist at the Goodman Arts Centre of Singapore since 2011.

Mikael Lindström (SWE)

Deputy Vice President Packaging Solutions and a senior Material Scientist at INNVENTIA AB and an Adjunct Professor in Interdisciplinary communication and Material science at the experience design group, Konstfack, The University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. Originally an Organic chemist working with pheromones and insect communication, continued at Firmenich SA in Geneva, Switzerland with flavour and fragrance research. Since 1995 at Innventia working with biobased materials, hierarchic design and material identities. He has been teaching at KTH, Konsfack, The university college of Gävle, Linköping University and the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. No 42 on the RISI TOP 50 Power list 2010. Only researcher on RISIs list of the 50 most influential people in the international pulp and paper industry.

Deirdre Logue (CAN)

Deirdre Logue's performance based film, video and installation works are self-portraits uniquely located between comfort and trauma, self-liberation and self-annihilation. By using domestic objects and spaces to contrary ends, her works capture gesture, duration and the body as both subject and object. ID's ITs, a catalogue of Logue's most recent suite of work is forthcoming. Exhibitions of her work have taken place at the Berlin International Film Festival, Oakville Galleries, YYZ Artists' Outlet (Toronto), BFI (London), and Kino Arsenal (Berlin). She was a founding member of Media City in Windsor, Executive Director of the Images Festival (1995-1999), Executive Director of the Canadian Filmmakers' Distribution Centre (2001-2006). She is currently the Development Director at Vtape and runs FAG, a feminist art gallery, with Allyson Mitchell.

Rachel Maclean (GBR)

is a Glasgow based artist working largely in green screen composite video and digital print, often exhibiting this alongside props, costumes and related sculpture and painting. In recent videos such as 'Over The Rainbow' and 'LolCats' she created a synthetic spaces in which Katy Perry discuses teeth whitening with an aristocratic cat, a decapitated diva dances to hip pop and a pastel blue dog sings for The Queen. Her video work attempts to unify the aesthetic of The Dollar Store, Youtube, Manga, Hieronymus Bosch and High Renaissance painting with MTV style green screen and channel changing cuts. Inspired by the Britney Spears head shaving, She explores the moment at which unified, constructed identity throws it's self up and tips into it's opposite. The instant of self-consumption, when the signature white smile of the teen pop sensation begins to hungrily gnaw at it's own image.

Léon McCarthy aka 3pin (IRL)

Léon McCarthy (aka 3pin) is a practicing audiovisual artist, PhD researcher at Northumbria University and lecturer at the University of Limerick. His academic background spans classical music, architecture and music technology. His first foray into digital performance was as a VJ in 2003. He has since produced and performed as a musician, featuring as one half of the once renowned Irish electro outfit, Les Bien. He co-founded the Irish video production company, MercuryBoy, creating virals, promos, product-launches and festival visuals. His current audio-visual performances address environmental ecologies, with the goal of finding an audio-visual approach tuned towards instilling a greater awareness of sustainability in his audience. At this year’s DAW, he combines the discursive platform with the audio-visual remix, pushing the boundaries of his own practice.

Wendy McCurdo (GBR)

Wendy McMurdo specializes in photography and digital media. Her work has been the subject of documentaries for BBC2 and Channel 4 and is included in the British Library Sound Archive’s Oral History of British Photography. She is currently developing a number of commissions investigating the early explorations of the self and has been included in a number of key group exhibitions and publications on the subject. Olympia is her first solo-directed project.

Rory Middleton (GBR)

Since graduating with an MFA from Glasgow School of Art I have exhibited across Europe and North America, my installation works have included;The View, a solo Exhibition shown both at Cove Park Scotland 2012, and at the The Banff Centre in Canada 2010, the piece combined film, live musical performance and sculpture combining architecture and nature.Steady Water –Fogo Island 2012, an architectural form made of timber frames with thin walls of ice to create a projection surface to project the unique colors of an out of focus Fogo Island filmed sunset. An infinity swimming pool on the 6th floor terrace of a building in Zagreb, Croatia. I also built a 30ft mountain with a modernist house atop that the viewer could enter and watch over an otherworldly landscapeFilm works have included Lessonlands 2008 and ‘Searching for Hjetna’2010 in which the landscape forms a central character. ‘Searching for Hjetna’ was showen at Reykjavik Art Museum 2011,

Allyson Mitchell (CAN)

Allyson Mitchell is a maximalist artist working in sculpture, performance, installation, and film. Her ongoing aesthetic/political project, "Deep Lez" advocates a strategic return to the histories of radical and lesbian feminisms. Mitchell's forthcoming epic performance/installation titled Killjoy's Kastle, a Lesbian Feminist Haunted House, will be launched in September 2013. Her work has exhibited in numerous venues including the Textile Museum of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Warhol Museum, Tate Modern and the British Film Institute. She is based in Toronto, where she is an Assistant Professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at York University and runs FAG, a feminist art gallery, with Deirdre Logue.

Stefan Müller Arisona (CHE/SGP)

Stefan Müller Arisona is a Principal Investigator at ETH Zurich's Future Cities Laboratory and an Assoc Professor (Adj) at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. His main interests are at the intersections of science, art and technology, and his research focuses on interactive and generative design tools for architectural and urban modelling and simulation. Stefan graduated in Electrical Engineering at ETH Zurich, completed his PhD at the University of Zurich in 2004, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California, Santa Barbara from 2007 - 2008. He is co-author of Procedural's (now Esri's) CityEngine. As an artist, Stefan has performed internationally and his works have appeared at renowned venues such as the Ars Electronica Center (Austria, 2006 - 2008, 2009)

Peter Morin (CAN)

is of the Crow clan of the Tahltan Nation of Telegraph Creek, BC. As a practicing artist and educator, Peter’s work looks deeply into issues of First Nation’s identity, de-colonizing through relationship building and speaking one indigenous language. Peter Morin was awarded the British Columbia Creative Achievement Award for First Nations’ Art in 2010.

Holgar Mohaupt (DEU)

Holger Mohaupt is a digital artist and filmmaker born in Germany and based in Scotland since 1995. He graduated from the art academy in Hamburg, did a master in Media Ecology and finished a Phd on ‘The Role of the Digital Mediator in Contemporary Art Practice’ in 2008 at the University of Dundee. He is currently teaching fellow in Art & Media at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design in Scotland.

Daniela Alina Plewe (DEU/SGP)

Since 1992 she developed media art projects informed by cognitive science, artificial intelligence and computational linguistics which were presented in more 50 exhibitions internationally and won several awards. Collaborations include the MIT Media Lab, Harvard Law Lab, Ars Electronica, Canon Art Lab Tokyo, UCLA, Fraunhofer Institute among others. She holds a PhD from the Sorbonne Paris I combining Art and Business/Finance; Previously she had studied Philosophy of Science and received a Master in Media Design from the University of Arts Berlin. Since 2005 she is living in Singapore lecturing at the National University of Singapore. Since the 1990ties till 2005 she has been also a creative consultant for communication agencies working for the major brands in the automotive, telecommunications and IT industries. The approach of transactional arts was rewarded as a finalist at the Vilem Flusser international theory price 2010.

Will Pappenheimer (USA)

Will Pappenheimer, Pace University, NY, has exhibited new media works at FILE, ISEA,Kunstraum Walcheturm, CHE, the ICA, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Postmasters, Vertexlist, NY. He has a NEA Fellowship, Turbulence and Rhizome grants and articles in the New York Times, El Pais and “Digital Art.”

Lalie S. Pascual (CHE)

Digital media artist, Lalie S. Pascual received her MA in Fine Art at Central St. Martins University of the Arts in London, having being previously trained at Brandeis University, Massachusetts. Additional academic background includes a Master of Science in Management from Boston University. Her practice explores boundaries between the natural and the digital worlds through digital processes that synthesize images and video footage into new “states of existence”. She exhibited with Monika Bobinska Gallery, London, Gallery Lucy Mackintosh, Lausanne, the Boston Cyberarts, Boston, the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, the FPAC gallery, Boston, and at GENERAL INFORMATION the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne.

Razi Razak (SGP)

KNIVES is an evil moniker created by Razi Razak to spin minimal/techhouse/techno. Inspired by Andy Warhol's artwork called Knives in 1981. He is a multi-faceted creative individual who is always looking to engage and challenge the sociality of life through work. Brand ideologist, independent music promoter and art curator. Founder of The Rockstar Collective (THE RSC) which carries event brands such as Identite, Statement and Canopus. Knives is also involved in a sound art performative outfit, Occupation.

Peter Richardson (GBR)

Peter Richardson is a filmmaker and Director of the Visual Effects Research Lab (VERL) A European Union funded project that undertakes transdiscaplinary research into high-resolution image technologies. After graduating form Goldsmiths College in 1989, Peter spent 14 years in the film industry. He has exhibited video works at The BarbicanLondon, City Racing Gallery London and Marian Goodman Gallery New York. Hisexperimental films have been screened on television and at film festivals worldwide including: ’Out Takes’ Brazil, New York, Los Angeles, Cannes, Cork, London and Hamburg film festivals and The National Review Of Live Art The Tramway Glasgow. Peter is Professor of Digital Film at the University of Hertfordshire in England.

Monika Rut (POL/CHE)

Monika Rut is a cultural researcher and a photographer. She holds a Masters in Arts Managemant from University of Bologna and Hamburg University of Music and Theatre. Since completing her studies, she has worked with a number of international organizations including: Kulturprojekte Berlin GmbH, Museum Moderator Berlin,WIR gallery,zeroproject.berlin,phoenXfotostudio,ECF,Academia Vitae,ZAD berlin, ABADIR (Arts Between Architecture Design & Interdisciplinary Research).She is a founding member of Landform.

Rashid Saini (SGP)

Rashid Saini teaches Contextual Studies for the Faculty of Media Arts at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore. Having a series of published short stories in the early years of his creative practices, he then moved on to exhibit his works (video installation and photography) in Melbourne (where he completed his undergraduate studies majoring in Film and Photography), Vietnam, Malaysia, Germany and Singapore. His research looks at portrayals on the state of being and various forms of abstract communication, his MA thesis under the faculty of Fine Arts at LASALLE. 

He went on to organise the Asian Cultural Cinema 2011 symposium (16 Asian Directors and from 13 countries) to discuss the Asian personafication and diaspora through film, and The Singapore Portraits Project 2012 to address foreign-local relationship by integrating art and scientific research methodologies to produce a play, installation and a documentary that roved through five Singapore heartlands.

Raymond Saner (CHE)

Titular Professor in Organisation and International Management (University of Basle) and Visiting Professor at Sciences Po, Paris (Master in Public Affairs) is co-founder of CSEND, a Geneva based NGRDO (non-governmental research and development organisation, and the director of CSEND’s Diplomacy Dialogue branch. 

His research and consulting focuses on conflict studies and international negotiations at bilateral, plurilateral and multilateral levels in the field of trade (WTO), employment and poverty reduction (ILO, PRSP), and Human and Social Capital development in the educational sector (GATS/ES/WTO and OECD). His recent research focused on mediation as a means to solve environmental conflicts in the alpine region and on inter-ministerial trade policy coordination. He has pioneered the field of business diplomacy and contributes to the study of multi-stakeholder diplomacy within the field of diplomacy. He is a reviewer of the Journal of Applied Behaviour (JABS) and the Journal of Managerial Psychology.

Gerhard Schmitt (CHE/SGP)

is Professor for Information Architecture at ETH Zurich, Director of the Singapore-ETH Centre in Singapore, and Senior Vice-President ETH Global. He develops information architecture as the next level of computer-aided design at the city and at the territorial scale. In 2000, he initiated the virtual campus ETH World. In 2003, he devised the concept of ETH Science City, in 2005 an international competition for its integrated urban scale sustainability concept, and in 2007 the energy concept to cut ETH CO2 output in half within 10 years. He was visiting Professor at Harvard Graduate School of Design, at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the Technical University of Denmark and at the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). From 1994–1996 he was dean of the faculty and Department of Architecture at ETH Zurich.

Nick Schurch (GBR)

was educated and worked as an astrophysicist before joining the world of Bioinformatics, at Dundee, in 2009. His research focuses on identifying the genes involved in interesting biological processes, like the very first steps in an embryo’s development. Throughout this work he has been fascinated and surprised by the complexity of the Human genome and how much there is still to discover.

Michael Spicer (AUS/SGP)

Michael Spicer is, depending on the day, a composer, performer, programmer, sound designer and/or educator. He has been involved with music professionally since 1978, playing keyboards/synthesizers and flute, as well as many home made electroacoustic and software instruments. Notable groups in which he was a key member include “Redgum”, which had several hits in Australia during the 1980’s, “Electric Muse”, an experimental electronic duo active in Singapore in the early 2000’s, and the improvisation group Sonic Escapade, which he formed in 2007 and has performed in Singapore, Australia and UK.Michael holds degrees in both music and computer science and has constantly looked for interesting ways of combining the two. Over the past 15 years, he has built a number of interactive performance systems based on the idea of creating virtual ensembles of computer improvisers. In addition to showing these at international conferences, these systems have been regularly used in concerts and theatre productions. Michael currently teaches composition, performance and synthesis in the Diploma in Music and Audio Technology course, at Singapore Polytechnic.

F. Scott Taylor (CAN)

Principally a Communications Theorist and Techno-culture Critic, F. Scott Taylor resides in Toronto, Canada. When writing in these capacities, he specializes in analyzing the affect of telecommunications on individual, social and cultural psycho-pathology. At present he is completing The Dismantled Mouth: Of Social Autism, a text describing how telecommunications contribute to autist-like behavioural patterns. A recent article in the International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media concerns the chronic loss of referential forms of thought (metaphor, analogy, metonymy) through the influence of digital media, and the affect of this upon performance comprehension and critique. Taylor jokes that he comes by his trade honestly since he works in the tradition of Marshall McLuhan, who directed his graduate work, and for whom he was a stand-in lecturer during the 1970s. Since then, Taylor has written and directed many multi-media, multi-disciplinary theatre works some of which have been produced across Canada, at two seasons of the Edinburgh Festival, and throughout the United States and Europe, most notably, perhaps, at Pompidou Centre. In late 2005 he collaborated with Marion Traenkle on a digital lecture performance, NEWS, at Gasthuis Theater, Amsterdam. In addition, he is happy to serve on the Executive of The Subtle Technologies Association

Tamiko Thiel (USA/DEU)

is a visual artist developing the dramatic and poetic capabilities of various forms of virtual and augmented reality as a medium for exploring social and cultural issues in site-specific artworks. She has degrees in engineering design from Stanford and MIT and a fine arts degree from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. She has exhibited internationally in venues such as the Istanbul Biennial, the International Center for Photography in New York, the ICA London Media Centre, the ICA Boston, the ZKM in Karlsruhe and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, and at festivals such as Siggraph, ISEA and Ars Electronica. Her work has been supported by grants from WIRED Magazine, the Japan Foundation, and the MIT Center for Advanced Visual Studies, Berlin Capital City Cultural Fund (Hauptstadtkulturfonds) and the IBM Innovation Award.

Lukas Treyer (CHE)

Lukas Treyer studied architecture at ETH Zurich. He is researching and teaching at the ETH Zurich, department Information Architecture. He is managing the Value Lab, a research and teaching facility equipped with high resolution screens and interactive tables. Lucas is interested in improving the usability of tools at the Chair for Information Architecture as well as in urban and architectural planning. Using the Value Lab as a test case, it involves productivity tools on the web as well as research on new interface technologies. He also works on integrating graphical syntax of architects and urban planners within the interaction of simulation tools of the simulation platform for urban planning. As a former student assistant at ETH he gathered a lot of experience in terms of web interfaces and other interface technologies. He recently was involved in an installation in Baden that featured projected visual illusion on a building in real scale - a cooperation between ETH Zürich, Information Architecture and Stadtfest Baden.

UBERMORGEN.COM is a Swiss–Austrian–American artist duo founded in 1995 by lizvlx and Hans Bernhard. They live and work in Vienna, Basel and S-chanf near St. Moritz in the alpine Engadina valley in Switzerland. Hans Bernhard (CHE) is a Vienna and St. Moritz based artist working in the fields of digital and fine art. Derek Vollmer

Derek Vollmer is a PhD candidate in the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (D-BAUG) at ETH Zurich, and concurrently a researcher in the Singapore-ETH Centre's Future Cities Laboratory. His PhD research is in the field of environmental planning, with a focus on ecosystem services within an urbanized river catchment in Indonesia. Prior to moving to Singapore, Mr. Vollmer was a Program Officer in the Science & Technology for Sustainability unit of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in Washington, DC. Mr. Vollmer holds a B.A. in Government and International Studies from the University of Notre Dame (USA) and a M.S. in Environmental Science and Policy from Johns Hopkins University (USA).
