About the Workshop

The framework of all of the projects consists of providing a group of arts-interested people with a highly creative artist of international rank. The role of each of the creative artists selected is to focus on nurturing creativity within the context of engagement over the entire duration of the project, from the initial concept phase to the actual moment of performance.

The concept of Sustain It! project is based on the idea of inviting a group of music minded people to write and to learn to compose sound art works/ word music works by using just words and to perform them as a group using a variety of hand held percussion instruments and/or sound circuits. The works created can be easily taught and learned by a group of players having varied abilities. The work functions modularly so that people who enter the space with an interest to participate can observe, pick up on the "vibe" and join in ad lib with the aid of a participant. By the end of day many will have learned something about sound art and many will have participated in an ever-changing music that runs over the entire span of an evening.

The importance of the project is evident in that it offers something of value to the general community by providing a one-of-a-kind performance of the highest quality within public space and one that also engages the public in a highly creative manner as potential participants and listeners.


  • Participants will learn how to produce sounds properly from standard hand-held percussions instruments, learn how to produce a vocabulary of interesting and usable sounds with standard and “homemade” hand-held instrumental creations.
  • Once a repertoire of sounds has learned and the playing of them has become natural, the participants will begin to explore their use solo and group improvisations, as well as simple compositions that explore the use of sound textures.
  • With the instruments mastered and with ensemble experience learned through improvising and study of the compositions, the participants will learn to explore a performance space through experimenting with positioning themselves in that space to see how a space be used creatively.
  • The workshop concludes with learning how to write own compositions that combine sonically with those of other participants and learn how these can then be performed together in public space as “soundscapes “ for the general public passing by to enjoy.
  • For the performance, compositions will be printed on t-shirts so that the public can follow the compositions while enjoying its realization and even learn to play the work with the assistance by the performer.


The workshop is open to all persons with an interest in sound and willing to perform in public. The number of participants is limited and participation is on a first come first serve basis. The workshop will be run by experienced music educators Mr. Roland Dahinden and Mrs. Hildegard Kleeb from Zug Switzerland.

The results of the workshop will be in the form of a performance under the title “SUSTAIN IT!” and represents an important contribution to the DAW Festival in its efforts to explore public space.

Roland Dahinden (CHE)

Roland Dahinden studied trombone and composition at Musikhochschule Graz (Erich Kleinschuster, Georg F. Haas), Scuola di Musica di Fiesole (Vinko Globokar), Wesleyan University Connecticut (Anthony Braxton, Alvin Lucier) and Birmingham University England (Vic Hoyland). As a trombonist, he specializes in the performance of contemporary music and improvisation/jazz worldwide. Composers such as Maria de Alvear, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Joelle Léandre, Alvin Lucier, Chris Newman, Pauline Oliveros, Christian Wolff amongst others wrote especially for him. Since 1987, he works in the duo with Hildegard Kleeb and since 1992 together in the trio with the violinist Dimitrios Polisoidis. As a composer, he collaborated with visual artists Andreas Brandt, Stéphane Brunner, Daniel Buren, Rudolf de Crignis, Sol LeWitt amongst others as well as with the architects Morger & Degelo, and with the author Eugen Gomringer.\\

Hildegard Kleeb (CHE)

Hildegard Kleeb is a well-known pianist who specializes in the performance of New Music and improvisation. After completing her studies in Zurich, she continued with Claude Helffer in Paris and with Jürg Wyttenbach in Basel. In 1990 she was a visiting scholar at the Academy for Visual Art Design in Helsinki and from 1992 to 1995 she was a resident artist at Wesleyan University, Connecticut. She has premiered numerous new works including compositions from Peter Ablinger, Maria de Alvear, Anthony Braxton, John Cage, Roland Dahinden, Hauke Harder, Bernhard Lang, Alvin Lucier, and Christian Wolff. She has recorded for Everest Rec. Berne, hatART Basel, Lovely Music New York, Mode Rec. New York, World Music Cologne and several others. Since 1987, she has been playing in duo formation with Roland Dahinden, since 1992 as a member of the Trio Dahinden-Kleeb-Polisoidis, and as a duo with Pelayo Fernandez Arrizzabalaga. Recently she has been involved with a series of “Social Performance“ projects such as „Zitronenbaum“ and „Kirschblütenzweig und Uristier” that addresses important social and political issues of today.
